We recently spoke with Senior Art Manager, Sapna S V, about her career beginnings, time with Technicolor Games and what it means to be a People’s Manager.
With Women’s History Month in mind, Sapna also took the opportunity to highlight how great it is to be a woman in the industry and what she hopes for the next generation of women in games.
We must believe that we can be exceptionally successful in whatever we choose to do.
Can you provide a brief overview of your role and when you started at Technicolor Games?
I am a Senior Art Manager and joined Technicolor Games at the beginning of 2022, in my role I manage a team of artists, leads and “sups”. My primary focus is ensuring from the get-go that our employees have all the support and guidance required to settle in their roles and be successful in their journey with us at Technicolor Games, whether that’s in training and development, performance and career management, succession planning or engagement.
How did your career begin?
I started my career as a Product Trainer before eventually transitioning into managing end-to-end training on product and leadership for employees. I have a total of 19-years’ experience as a People Manager with the last five years spent at Technicolor Creative Studios, two of which have been in the Games business unit. The years with Technicolor Games have been immensely helpful in understanding the different and new ways of working in today’s ever-changing, post-Covid world.
What made you want to pursue a career in the Games industry?
There are no boundaries when it comes to games, this coupled with the excitement, joy and happiness they bring to us all was a very inspiring factor for me. To contribute in the creation of these top-notch games, using the best-in-class technology is an amazing experience, and a proud feeling for oneself to be a part of. I wanted to be where the action happens and I am happy to be at the forefront of it now in Technicolor Games.
What has been the biggest change within the industry that you’ve noticed over the course of your career?
Firstly, it brings me great joy to see the increasing number of women joining and excelling in the workforce. This is a great trajectory to continue on, as this not only fills in a void but challenges the status quo.
Secondly, post Covid we all adapted very well to the dynamic change in work culture which has since led to evolving expectations and needs. So, as a People’s Manager it becomes even more important for us be tuned into our artists and be there for them at every step in their career development.
What do you find most rewarding in your role?
I am privileged to work with some great people; I fully believe the learnings and the experiences they bring to the table adds more years to one’s life. I enjoy and cherish the collaboration, diversity, transparency and creativity my role has to offer. Aside from this, the exciting new tools and technology we use is an added bonus.
What is your most memorable moment working at Technicolor Games?
Playing the games we’ve helped to build is always a rewarding experience. Watching the team play these games first-hand in the studio, and sharing in their achievements and learnings is great to be a part of.
What advice could you give to someone wanting to join the industry?
Games as an industry is growing leaps and bounds and we must embrace each opportunity presented to us wholeheartedly, in turn we can all be involved in creating a piece of history.
What do you hope for the next generation of women in the Games industry?
There is lots to look forward to; I personally feel women have the right emotional intelligence needed to make the work environment more employee-centric, and with that, nothing can stop us.
Whether that’s taking on more leadership roles, handling huge teams or contributing as an individual to something bigger, we must believe that we can be exceptionally successful in whatever we choose to do.
