With a new year comes exciting new opportunities for the Gaming world. We put our VP of Business Development for North America, Eric Williams, in the hot seat for his 2024 predictions.
From the impact of last year and anticipated industry trends, to technological evolutions and Technicolor Games, take a look at what Eric believes 2024 has in store for us.
Looking back on 2023, what were your highlights within the Games industry?
Well, where do we start? How about the amazing game launches we had? Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield, Tears of the Kingdom, Spider-man 2, Mortal Kombat 1, Street Fighter 6, 2K24, Diablo IV… to name just a few.
I am always impressed with the resilience of the games industry. With all the headwinds that we faced in 2023, many studios around the globe managed to execute successfully and eloquently on so many new titles.
Oh yeah, and there was that thing called AI. Did anyone else hear about this?
Can you choose one for Technicolor Games specifically?
I am very proud of our team’s commitment to excellence and setting the highest quality bar. They delivered content on some massive titles last year, all while managing to remain flexible and adapt to macroeconomic issues.
Can you provide some comment on the major events or industry trends that affected the games market in 2023?
In 2023, the games market witnessed another year of historic acquisitions; consolidating market power but also setting another benchmark for industry valuation. However, I believe this consolidation came at a cost, leading to significant layoffs across several well-established studios, resulting in the departure of talented developers and industry veterans. These sparked discussions about industry sustainability and the need for more comprehensive support systems for developers.
In the realm of technology, artificial intelligence (AI) played a transformative role. Overnight, AI tools reshaped the way we approach game development, enabling more efficient content creation and dynamic player experiences. Studios began integrating AI-driven algorithms for procedural generation, increasing both the scale and intricacy of in-game worlds.
How do you think this will shape 2024?
Looking ahead, the events of last year have actually positioned the industry for a remarkable leap forward. I anticipate more games released with larger, more immersive worlds, heightened visual fidelity and innovative live operations.
Furthermore, I believe user-generated content will gain even more momentum with platforms like Roblox and Fortnite empowering players to contribute actively to the gaming experience.
Are there any industry trends that you think will impact the market in 2024?
Specifically for external development, our commitment is to continually evolve our support mechanisms to meet the demands of our clients’ studios. AR/VR/XR technologies are on the horizon once again with a renewed focus on immersive and interactive experiences. I believe we will see more widespread adoption of generative AI tools reshaping content creation and enhancing efficiency in game development processes. I think cloud gaming and on-demand services will continue to evolve. Maybe there will even be another large acquisition.
What can we expect from Technicolor Games as we progress through 2024?
